This might be our favorite blog post to date. Like ever!
First thing's first - this week is Cinco de Mayo! So what better way to celebrate than with chips, guac, and mocktail margaritas?
Since we don't really ever need a reason to eat Mexican food and sip a nice mocktail (who does, honestly?) when we found Vital Proteins PROTEIN PACKED GUACAMOLE recipe, we had to try it!
What is Collagen?
What is collagen, you ask? Only the most abundant protein in the body! It's responsible for firm, wrinkle-free skin, shiny hair and nails, healthy joints and bones, and more. Production begins to slow down as you reach your late twenties (which is also why you begin to notice wrinkles and creaking joints around this age too.)
What are Collagen peptides?
Collagen peptides are a white powder substance that can be mixed into anything since it's virtually tasteless and dissolves into liquids, oatmeal, smoothies, baked goods, soups, and....guacamole!
What are the benefits of collagen peptides during pregnancy?
Collagen supplementation is a good idea for pregnant women for many reasons including:
- Reduced risk of stretch marks
- Improves gut health by protecting the intestinal wall
- Rids your body of toxins
- Reduces joint and bone aches/pains
Is it collagen Safe during Pregnancy?
Yes, most peptide collagen (aside from marine collagen) is safe during pregnancy, but should not be used as a substitute for a healthy diet. Check with your doctor or midwife before starting any new supplement or medication.
How much collagen should I have a day?
You'll need to eat more protein during pregnancy. "While normally it is recommended that women consume 0.36 g protein per pound of body weight per day, this increases to 0.5 g during pregnancy" according to Bubs Natural,
Will collagen make my hair thicker and skin smoother?
Vital Proteins was nice enough to send us a canister of their best-selling Collagen Peptides to test it out, and we loved it. After going through a couple of canisters, we can honestly say our hair is thicker, digestion has improved, and our wrinkles are somewhat less visible.
While you won't notice overnight results, with continued use we are confident you will begin to see some changes in your health.
As always, if you are concerned about a new supplement during pregnancy, be sure to check with your OB/GYN first.
So now that you know WHY collagen is so good for you, we can get to the good stuff....the protein packed guacamole!
